FAQ

We have great conversations with our fans all the time, whether in our taproom or out at events & festivals we participate in. Those questions that get asked routinely seemed appropriate for a Frequently Asked Questions page.

So Here it is. These are the questions many have with the answers that fit the Kinetic Brewing craft beer philosophy. Not everything said here is true with all beer you'll drink, so it's important to understand Kinetic standards aren't the standards of all beer makers.

They are however most common in the Craft Beer industry.

General Beer Q&A;

There are microbreweries, craft breweries and brewpubs. What is the difference?

It’s a size thing. Though all pour premium ingredients, passion and experimentation into their work, micros typically serve local audiences only and produce less than 15,000 US barrels per year. Craft Brewers take that same commitment to a wider audience. Brewpubs are like microbreweries, except that they are also a bona-fide eating establishment. This exception allows brewpubs to serve wine, other breweries beers and sometimes liquor. Kinetic Brewing Co. on Lancaster Blvd. is a brewpub.

The descriptions of your beer mention “bitterness units.” What are those?

A standard measurement for beer bitterness imparted by hops — a higher number indicates higher bitterness, and therefore higher hop usage. Higher BUs do not always correspond to higher perceived bitterness — the malt character in the beer will affect perceived bitterness.

What’s the difference between an ale and a lager?

The difference between ales and lagers has nothing to do with strength, color, or bitterness. The difference is the yeast and the fermentation temperature. Ale yeast ferments best at warmer temperatures — up to about 75° F. Because a yeasty foam rises to the surface of the beer, these are known as “top-fermenting” yeast. Lager yeast, on the other hand, prefers cooler temperatures. They are called “bottom-fermenting” yeast because they sink to the bottom of the beer during the cold storage period traditional for lager beers. This process removes haze and gives lagers their characteristic clean, rounded tastes.

What is “dry hopping?”

We add additional hops to some of our beers as they age in tanks. This increases the aroma and hop character of the finished beer without affecting its bitterness.

Kinetic Beer Q&A;

What are the ingredients used in Kinetic beers?

Kinetic Brewing Co. uses the highest quality and most natural brewing ingredients while utilizing the very best brewing practices. This allows us to create ales and lagers with superior flavor, aroma, balance, and character. As a traditional brewer, Kinetic currently uses malted two-row barley (malt), hops, yeast, and water for every brew. Some of our beers include wheat or oats. Velocity contains lactose.

Read More about the brewing process and ingredients on our 'Craft Beer Explained' page.

Are any animal products used in the brewing process?

All of our beer is brewed, fined and packaged without the use of isinglass, bone char or any other animal by-product.

Do your beers contain wheat or other grains with gluten?

We believe that the best beers are born from the best possible ingredients, and malted barley and wheat are among the grains that help us create exceptional beers. Both of these grains contain small amounts of naturally occurring gluten, and although the brewing process notably reduces the gluten levels, no beer brewed using these materials can be called gluten free. We have been experimenting with enzymes that would aid in the reduction of gluten even further, but we have not commercially released any of these experiments as yet.
